The
drive to Cachopo, with its twisting mountain roads, and magnificent views
is tremendous. Pass the Quinta do Cegonha, if you're lucky the stork will
be on its nest. Further along the road visit the old couple sell honey
from their house.

Cachopo
is a very traditional Portuguese village, so don't expect high levels
of tourism here. There are artisan shops in the village, and restaurants.
Popular here are knitted garments, and woven blankets decorated with embroidery
inspired by the wild flowers found in the fields. The saddlemakers of
Cachopo still twist brightly coloured woollen threads into decorative
flourishes worn by the mules used in the hills. The church is imposing
with its steep steps. Inside, it is simple and there is a beautiful modern
stained glass panel and an exhibition of statues. The old house next door
has examples of the old way of life, with the donkey in the stable, with
its head in the single room, which is the living area. The streets are
narrow, and you may hear lively chatter, or catch a glimpse of the old
boys, crowded into a room in the winter, or sitting outside when its warmer.
There is also a museum here.
